St Andrews Medical Practice

Our Patient Participation Group

Please do not attempt to join if you are not registered at this practice -this group is only open to patients ALREADY registered

Want to have your say….. then join the St Andrews Patient Participation Group and help to direct the Practice and its services.

Following the analysis of a Patient Survey that was carried out in 2011, the St Andrews Medical Practice decided to invite patients to join a group that represented both the patients of the Practice and the Practice doctors and staff. The purpose of this Patient Participation Group is to make sure that patients have a voice and, consequently, such feedback will help to improve the service provided to patients of the Practice and at the same time assist the Practice in achieving that aim.

There are currently 38 registered members of the Group, which has been meeting on a quarterly basis for a couple of years. A typical meeting takes place at either 1 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. on a Wednesday and lasts for around an hour. Meeting attendance has usually been around 8 to 12 of the current patient members plus a couple of Doctors, and the Practice Manager, Michele Eshmene.

David Stern initially accepted the Chairmanship of the Group because the Practice wanted a patient to take the chair rather than a member of its staff. Another patient, Janet Hart has recently taken over the Chairmanship.

The Group has already had a number of wide-ranging discussions on matters such as in-house blood tests (now implemented), appointment system issues, doctor continuity, patient no-shows, text message reminders (now implemented), disabled parking (use double yellow lines outside surgery), waiting room improvements (now implemented), etc.

Some current key objectives for the Group to achieve include:

  • Introducing email communication to enable the Practice to provide better, up-to-date information; encourage greater viewing of the Practice’s website and participation in online services for repeat prescriptions, online appointments and patient survey completion; and, occasionally, disseminate information on behalf of the Patient Participation Group.

  • Prioritising patients’ needs for appointments. Emergency appointments with any available doctor are working satisfactorily, but there is room for considerable improvement in requesting non-urgent appointments with one’s own doctor. The Patient Participation Group would like to see at least four weeks’ availability of doctors maintained for both telephone and online bookings, although accepting that this will occasionally lead to some appointments having to be rescheduled due to late non-availability of a doctor for some valid reason.

  • Maintaining a  Patient Participation Group section of the Practice’s newsletter to give patients an insight into what the group is doing;

The Group would welcome new members, so please register your interest to Janet Hart, Chairperson, at StAndrewsPPG@gmail.com and you will be invited to the next meeting. If you just want to put forward a suggestion for the Group to discuss at a future meeting, simply email Janet with the details.

This is your opportunity to make a positive contribution towards helping the Practice achieve the highest possible standards of service and care for its patients, so please do not hesitate to contact Janet with your offer to participate and your suggestions.
